MERLE HAINES, Washington

Merle D. Haines, 86, died Feb. 22, 2011, in Anacortes, Wash.

The family will honor Merle’s wishes to have his ashes scattered at sea. No service will be held. Memorials may be directed to Friends of Anacortes Community Forest Lands or a charity of your choice.

Merle was born on Oct. 26, 1924, on the family farm in Winterset. After graduating from high school, he served in the Navy during WWII. He met his future wife Frances while stationed at Cape Cod. He worked with Northwest Airlines, beginning as a radio mechanic and retiring as a DC-10 Captain. The couple raised their family in Minnesota, then moved to the Pacific northwest to enjoy retirement. He was an active member of the Fidalgo Yacht Club and Anacortes Kiwanis, and enjoyed gathering with the Friday Boys.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances, and his sister, Helen.

He is survived by his brother, Lyle; his children, Nancy, Ron and Karen; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
