This community was saddened Sunday morning when the message came from Des Moines that little Beulah Emerson had died at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines that morning. We have made mention of her being there under treatment, and on Saturday last she was operated on. She could not rally from the nervous shock to the system in her weakened condition. The sympathy of all goes out to the bereaved ones. The following obituary was read at the funeral:
BEULAH BELL the youngest daughter of James and Lyde Emerson was born near East Peru, May 2d, 1907, and died at the age of 10 years, 1 month and 1 day.
This young life knew almost nothing of pain until her last illness. Cold from measles settled in her hip and this trouble led her to an early death. After ten days of suffering she was removed to Mercy hospital where for more than three weeks the best of medical skill did everything that could be done to relieve her suffering. She appeared to be recovering from an operation performed on Saturday morning, but after a few hours she gradually grew weaker and passed away at eight o’clock Sunday morning. The shock from the operation seemed to be more than her heart nerves could withstand.
Beulah was an affectionate daughter and sister. She was a favorite among her playmates and was loved by all who knew her.
She leaves to mourn her loss a loving mother; three sisters, and three brothers: Mrs. Lyde Emerson, Mrs. C. S. Kelley of Truro, Arnie of Peru, Mrs. G. R. Simmons of near Winterset, Berdie, Loyal, and Darry who are at home. Her father and two brothers, Clarence and Cleo having preceded her.
Beulah had a host of friends among her school companions. There were many who loved and admired this sweet little girl. In the Sunday School she was an earnest scholar. In school she was loved by her teacher and playmates. God has taken a sweet little child to be at home in Heaven; another jewel to beautify His crown.
The pall bearers were Misses Alma Mease, Mabel Gray, Velcie and Verdi Fenimore, Flora Davis and Nellie Cosand.
The choir sang very beautifully three selections, “The Jewels”, “Will there be Any Stars in My Crown”, and “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere.”
The funeral service was conducted from the Methodist Episcopal church of East Peru, Iowa, by Rev. Orville Paul Manker, Interment was made in the Peru cemetery.
