Avis Marie Compton Kenworthy was born October 31, 1918 at home in Madison Township, Madison County to Royal Glen and Maude Marie (Utterback) Compton. She attended the Bennett-North River Stone School through the eighth grade, after which she attended school in Winterset.

In March of 1935, Avis moved with her family to the town of Earlham when she was a junior in high school. Upon moving to Earlham, she met a young man named Beryl Kenworthy. After “serious” courting for two years, the two were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on August 22, 1940. To this union, a daughter, Margaret (Peg) and a son, Richard (Dick) were born.

Avis was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club, the Earlham Garden Club, Chautauqua Club, and Sunshine Circle. As a couple, Avis and Beryl belonged to two different pitch clubs, and were long-time members of the Earlham Friends Church. She was very active in the church, serving on many committees and teaching Sunday school for many years. Avis was a vital part of the church family as long as she was able.

Recalling vacations with Dale and Mary Smith was always a favorite pastime of the Kenworthy family. Avis loved working in the garden, taking care of her flowers, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was extremely proud of her 70 years spent with Beryl, helping him maintain their family’s century farm and home north of Earlham. Avis enjoyed fishing, feeding and watching the birds outside the house.

Avis’ home was always a welcoming haven to friends, family, and anyone in need. The gentle kindness she showed to everyone she encountered is the legacy that her family will carry forward forever.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Glen Compton.

Survivors include her husband, Beryl Kenworthy, a sister, Pauline Tuttle of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; daughter, Peg (Jeff) Lorimor of Boone and Dick (Patti) Kenworthy of rural Earlham; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
