Thomas Johnson was born in the town of Barnick, Northampton Shire, Old England, Sept.11, 1834, departed this life Feb. 19, 1917, age 82 years, 3 months and 8 days. He came from England to America, when he was 21 years old, stopping in New York, and from there to Illinois and stayed a few years and then to Wisconsin, where he resided for some length of time; then moved to Madison county, Iowa, where he lived until the time of his departure.
In 1865 he was united in marriage to Miss Harriet Cleveland. To this union six children were born, two, Martha and Ida, having preceded him to the great beyond. He is survived by his faithful companion and four children: Will, Andrew, Charlie, and Erny and many relatives and friends.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Allen D. Mann at the residence, 723 East Filmore St., Feb. 21st at 10 a.m. In the presence of a large audience of relatives, friends and neighbors. Text from Isaiah 6, 4-6: “We all do fade as a leaf”. The speaker said in part that we are dependent creatures, and the demands of the soul in the hour of dissolution can only be met by a spiritual force, such as Christ, the Son of God imparts to his followers. Some leaves fade instantly, others gradually, some naturally, but all surely, fade we must.
