Obituary – Caleb Rollings

Caleb Rollings was born in Illinois March 15, 1836 and died at the home of his son, W. P. Rollings, in Valley Junction, Iowa, March 2, 1911, aged 74 years 11 months and 17 days.

He came to Iowa when but a boy several years old and grew to manhood. The father, mother, brothers and sisters have all gone before.

Mr. Rollings was married to Miss Angeline Farson in 1859, to this union three children were born: Mrs. Catherine Sankey of Des Moines, Mrs. Fuller Trotter of Nebraska and W. P. Rollings of Valley Junction. The wife passing away 33 years ago. In March 1882 he married Mrs. Jane Foster and to this union one son was born who died at the age of seven years. This wife died in September 1910.

Mr. Rollings served three years in the Civil War, enlisting in the fall of 1862. He has also been a brave soldier in Christianity, uniting with the M. E. church about 30 years ago and was a consistent and faithful member until the time of his death.

During the last two years of his life, he had been a sufferer from a sore foot, which was the cause of his left leg being amputated above the knee during the month of May. After this he seemed to be getting along real well until a couple of months ago and became worse.

He was taken to the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, he continued to grow worse and he was afterward taken to the home of his son in Valley Junction. The body was taken to Peru Saturday, March 4th. Funeral services were conducted by Rev.C. K. Corkill at the M. E. church at 2 P. M. after which he was laid to rest by the side of the companion who preceded him about six months ago. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and a good neighbor, and will be missed in the community.
