ETTA ALLEN JAMES

The body of Mrs. Etta Allen James was shipped here from Kansas, for burial, last Friday.

The news of her death came as a shock to her many friends and relatives here. She suffered from uremic poisoning, which was a very brief illness, of about 12 hours. Interment was at the Elm Grove cemetery.

Elm Grove

Mrs. Etta Allen James, who died at her home in Gun City, Mo., on Jan. 23d, was buried Friday in the King cemetery by the side of her husband, Obi Allen. Funeral services were held in the Elm Grove church by Rev. Manker.

She leaves to mourn her loss a husband, three children, eight step children, one daughter-in-law, one son-in-law and one granddaughter, three sisters, one brother and a host of friends.

She was one of Madison county’s most successful school teachers, having taught several years in Warren and Madison counties; and also in southwestern Kansas, where she moved a few years ago.

Her family has the sympathy of the community.

Williametta Josephine Hughes, daughter of Wm. and Elizabeth Ann Hughes was born in Kirkville, Iowa, January 28, 1864, and died at her home in Gunn City, Missouri, January 23, 1917, aged fifty-two years, eleven months and twenty-five days.

In early youth she came with her parents to Indianola, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood and received her education.

On December 31st, 1893, she was united in marriage to Obadiah Allen. To this union were born three children: Loren Glenn of Martensdale, Iowa; Laura Gladys Allen and Mrs. Mary Grace James of Gunn City, Missouri. This happy union was broken by the death of her husband on May 9th, 1903.

She continued her home life in Peru, Madison county, Iowa, until her marriage on February 9th, 1910 to Benjamin James. They made their home in Ensign, Kansas, and later in Gunn City, Missouri, until her death. Besides her husband and three children she leaves to mourn her loss, a little grandson, Charles Glenn James, one brother, Rev. R. B. Hughes of Alpena, South Dakota, and three sisters, Mrs. Jennie Jensen of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Mrs. Laura Ressler of Lohrville, Iowa, and Mabel G. Hughes of Indianola, Iowa.

Funeral services were held in the Elm Grove church at Peru, Iowa, on Friday, January 26, 1917, conducted by Rev. Orville P. Manker and interment was made in Elm Grove cemetery, where she rests by the side of her husband.
