John Joseph Smith was born July 13, 1881 in Lee Township, Madison County. He was the son of W. C. and Sophia Smith. He was united in marriage to Mary Frances Pray at St. Boniface Church in Waukee on Jan. 31, 1912. Mrs. Smith passed away July 25, 1959.

They moved to Dexter in 1932 from Van Meter.

He entered the Dexter Clinic Dec. 29 with a heart condition which resulted in his death Feb. 20, 1962 at the age of 80 years, 7 months and 7 days.

He is survived by his three children, Marie, Mrs. Ted Lint of Van Meter, Joseph of Earlham, and Gertrude, Mrs. Lawrence Spatz, of St. Louis, Mo.; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren, and one brother, A. C. Smith of Van Meter.

Burial was at the cemetery at Booneville.
