John Simpson was born in Scotland Dec. 17, 1839 and died at the home of his son, James, near St. Charles, on Jan. 11, 1917, aged 78 years and 25 days. About 1854, he came to Illinois and was married to Mary Craig, Aug. 16, 1863.
In 1868, they came to Iowa and settled in Crawford township, near St. Charles. To this union 11 children were born, three of whom are living to mourn the loss of their father: Mrs. Annie McKinnon and James Simpson of St. Charles and Sam Simpson of Des Moines; 15 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His wife preceded him to the great beyond about a year ago.
The story of Mr. Simpson is a sad one, as he has related it to the writer more than once. He was a member of the Presbyterian church in his younger days, but on account of some difficulty drifted away and was hard to reclaim. He took great interest during the building of the new United Presbyterian church here last summer and was on the grounds nearly every day. He also contributed to the building of the church.
The funeral services were conducted in the U.P. church last Saturday by Rev. McElroy, assisted by Rev. Williams and Rev. Orcutt, and his remains were laid to rest in Blair Chapel cemetery by the side of his wife.
