Death of Mrs. Mary E. Kern

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Kern, who was born near Bevington in 1862, died August 24th, at Bloomfield, Nebraska, at the home of her niece, Mrs. Edgar Swans, where she was visiting. Mrs. Kern is a niece of Mrs. Joe Ruth and Mrs. Mary M. Gaekle of Winterset, and of C. E. Huglin and Mrs. Will Houlette, of St. Charles.

Funeral services were held at Norwalk, Tuesday, August 30th, and those attending from this county were, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ruth and son, Hattle, Bertha Gaekle of Winterset, Mr. and Mrs. Will Houlette and sons, George and Dale, and Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Huglin and son, George, of St. Charles.

Miss Huglin’s mother died when she was only 14 years of age. She was married to Dr. J. H. Kern in 1882, at Winterset, and to them were born three sons, and three daughters. Her husband and oldest son, Vernon, have preceded her in death. The surviving children are Maude, Bernice, Dewitt, Stella and Byron. She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters.

Mary Elizabeth Kern was born in Iowa near Bevington on April 2nd, 1862. She passed away August 24th, 1927, at Bloomfield, Nebr., at the home of her niece, Mrs. Edgar Swanson, where she was visiting. Mrs. Kern was 65 years of age. Her own mother died when she was only fourteen years old and she assumed the role of both mother and sister to two little sisters, Stella and Nettie, and three brothers, Eddie, Bert and Charles. There survives her: Mrs. O. H. Jacobson of Bloomfield, Nebr, Charles Hughlin of Cimarron, Kansas and Bert Hughlin, Viewfield, So. Dak. To these brothers and sisters she was tireless in her loving care and service.

Mary Elizabeth Huglin was married to Dr. J. H. Kern in 1882 at Winterset. To them were born three sons and three daughters. Her husband and oldest son, Vernon, passed on before her. The surviving children to mourn her loss are Maude, Bernice, Dewitt, Stella and Byron, her daughter-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Lee, the wife of Byron Kern, and Le Roy Godfrey, husband of her daughter, Maude, and their three children, Gwendolyn, Zela Burnetta and Le Roy, Jr.
