Marlys P. Vaughan, Harpers Ferry

Marlys Pauline Vaughan, the daughter of Claude and Essie (Snyder) Drake was born August 14, 1938, in Winterset, Iowa. She attended country school in the Winterset area and graduated from Des Moines East High School in 1957. Marlys graduated from Americana Cosmetology College in August of 1958. Marlys was united in marriage with Thomas R. Vaughan on September 7, 1958 in Des Moines, Iowa. Tom preceded her in death on May 10, 2008. Marlys was a homemaker. She had worked at Morgan's Turkey Farm in Sumner as an egg handler and at The Hungry Peddler in Sumner as a waitress and cook.

Marlys' death occurred Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at her son's home in Sumner, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 72 years old. Marlys was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sumner and the American Legion Auxiliary in Sumner and Harpers Ferry. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, doing puzzles and word searches, bowling, birdwatching, and fishing.

Marlys is survived by her son, Thomas (Bev Davis) Vaughan, Jr. of Sumner, Iowa; her daughter, Gina (Wade) Breitsprecher of Des Moines, Iowa; three grandchildren, Noah, Lucas, and Leah Breitsprecher; three sisters, Donna Mae Schnoor of Pine River, Minnesota; Mary Jo (Jim) Ewald of Des Moines; and Janis McAuley of Des Moines; one sister-in-law, Sally Drake of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.

Marlys was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas; her parents; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, James T. and Ivy Vaughan; seven brothers, Jack Townsley, Bud, Glenn, Donovan, John, Fred, and Larry Drake; one sister, Betty Rankin; one sister-in-law, Carole Drake; and three brothers-in-law, Karl "David" McAuley, Fred Vaughan, and Meredith Vaughan.

Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, February 19, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Sumner with Rev. Shirley Hoffmann Will officiating. The family will greet friends for one hour preceding services at the church on Saturday. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner is assisting the family. (563) 578-3451.
