Death of Mrs. John B. Sawyer

Mrs. John B. (Barbara Ann) Sawyer, who had been critically ill for several weeks at her home in the east edge of Adair county, died early last Thursday morning, November 17. She was 73 years of age, having been born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, July 28, 1854. She came to Madison county with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Drake, by ox team and a covered wagon when she was but four years of age. She received her education in the Winterset schools and for ten years taught in the Madison and Adair county schools.

She was married to John B. Sawyer, July 24, 1883, who with their seven children survive her. The children are: T. J., James, R., John K., Mrs. Mabel Hollen, Mrs. Pearl Morris, Dr. Grace Ransom and Mrs. Ruth Givan. She also leaves sixteen grandchildren, and a brother, J. N. Drake, of Vinton.

Rev. A. R. Weed, assisted by Rev. W. J. Myers, conducted the funeral service in the Sawyer home, Saturday afternoon, November 19, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery. Those furnishing music at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Hollen, Norman Hollen and Miss Lillie Roberts, with Mrs. Eldon Beaman as organist.

DEATH SUMMONS PIONEER WOMAN

Mrs. John B. Sawyer, One Of Early Teachers Of Madison and Adair Counties Dies At Home.

The death of Mrs. John B. Sawyer, well known pioneer of Madison county, died at her home in Adair county Thursday, November 17, after a long illness. Mrs. Sawyer, who was 73 years old, came to the county in 1858 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Drake, the journey being made in a covered wagon which was pulled by a team of oxen. She attended the Winterset schools and ten years taught school in Madison and Adair counties, one of the early teachers of both counties.

Mrs. Sawyer took an active interest in the affairs of the new state and was one of the first members of the Methodist church which was organized at the Drake school house and later was transferred to Webster. She was married in 1883, and is survived by her husband and seven children, T. J. Sawyer Greenfield; Mrs. Mabel Hollen, Mrs. Pearl Morris, John and James Sawyer, all of Winterset, Dr. Grace Ransome, of Woodward; Mrs. Rose Givan, Orient; and a brother J. W. Dake (sic), of Vinton.

Funeral services were conducted at the home Saturday afternoon by the Rev. A. R. Weed, assisted by the Rev. W. J. Myers; burial was in the Winterset cemetery.

MIDDLE RIVER

Mrs. J. B. Sawyer, who has been sick for some time died Thursday morning. The funeral sermon was preached at the home by Rev. A. R. Weed, of West Star church helped by Rev. Myers. She was laid to rest in the Winterset cemetery. Mrs. Sawyer was no old settler here. There are a good many of us that remember her as our first school teacher. She leaves her husband and seven children to mourn her. The sorrowing family has the sympathy of their many friends.

Sam Sawyer and Mrs. And Mrs. Bryon Wilkinson, of Nebraska, came Friday to attend the funeral of Mrs. J. B. Sawyer which was held Saturday.

Those from a distance who were called to the Adair county home of Mrs. John Sawyer by her illness and death were Dr. Grace Ransome and Mr. Ransome, of Woodward; John K. Sawyer and his son Henry Sawyer, of Maryville, Missouri; Sam Sawyer, of Dalton, Nebraska; Mrs. Byron Wilkinson and Dean Sawyer of Broadwater, Nebraska.

Mrs. John B. Sawyer

Barbara Ann, eldest child of Dennis and Maria Crumrine Drake, was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, July 28, 1854 and departed this life at her home in Adair county, Iowa, November 17, 1927, aged 73 years, 3 months and 19 days. At the age of 4 years she with her parents and younger sister came to Madison county, Iowa, making the journey in a covered wagon and with ox team. She received her education in the Winterset schools after which she successfully taught school for ten years in Madison and Adair counties.

She was converted in February 1878 and united with the Methodist Episcopal church which was organized at the Drake school house, later being transferred to Webster. She was united in marriage to John B. Sawyer July 24, 1883. To this union were born seven children, F. J. Sawyer, Mrs. Mabel Hollen, Mrs. Pearl Morris, Dr. Grace Ransom, James R., and John K., and Mrs. Rose Given, all of whom live near and who were with her during her last sickness. Besides her husband she leaves sixteen grandchildren, one brother J. W. Drake, of Vinton, Iowa, who was unable to be here, and numerous relatives and friends to mourn her departure. Her exemplary life as wife and mother and neighbor will long be remembered.

The Rev. A. R. Weed, assisted by the Rev. W. J. Myers conducted the service in the Sawyer home Saturday afternoon, November 19, and interment was in the Winterset cemetery.
