DORIS JOHNSON, TRURO

Doris Johnson, age 93, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones on Feb. 4, 2011 in Dallas, Texas.

Born to Ernest and Bessie Mae Frank on Sept. 20, 1917, in rural Union County, Iowa. Doris was preceded in death by her beloved and adored sister Darlene and treasured “baby” brother Doyle, and survived by her equally treasured and adored younger brother Dale.

Doris married the love of her life, Doyle Johnson, on June 20, 1940. They celebrated over 62 years of marriage before Doyle was taken from his long suffering illness to be with the Lord. Doris was an amazing caregiver with a servant heart. They were blessed with four children, Franklin Dale – wife Kathy of Schaumburg, Ill.; Jacquelynn June – deceased in 2006; Debra Lynn – husband Mike Hardin of Winona, Miss.; Lisa Ann – husband Steve Jones of Dallas, Texas. She leaves behind a legacy of 10 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, with another expected in June.

DORIS LOVED THE LORD

Doris loved life – she woke up every morning with a song in her heart and mind that spilled out of her: “This is the day that the Lord has made ... I will rejoice and be glad in it.”

She loved the beauty of this earth – she loved to add to and surround herself with beauty – the flowers she planted and tended – her garden she lovingly tended so she could share its bounty with family and friends. Always creating something new – whether crocheting – or beading – always staying busy with the goal of giving her things of beauty to others.

She loved to gather family and friends together at every opportunity – she organized Bible studies in her home – she invited friends over for card parties – she held coffees and neighborhood Christmas parties. With every gathering came home made treats – pies, cinnamon rolls, fresh berries from her garden.

Doris loved music. She was blessed with, yet practiced much, at her musical talents. She played the organ, the piano, and led choir for numerous years. In her last years she visited surrounding nursing homes once a month to play favorite hymns and beloved “oldies” for the residents to enjoy.

Doris had just sold her home in Truro in November to move to Miss. and live next door to her daughter Debra. She loved it. She loved her new home – being able to enjoy and do things with her daughter – she was active and happy.

We miss her desperately, but we know she loved her active, busy life and would not have been content any other way. We trust God – His timing is perfect – He blessed us with an amazing role model. We know she is celebrating and singing and reunited with loved ones in heaven – praising God and seeing flowers and gardens that are beyond earthly imagination.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, with a service following at 11:00. Graveside services will be held in Winterset. Family and friends will gather at Truro United Methodist Church at 2 p.m.

Memorials can be given in Doris’ honor to Truro Methodist Church or the Truro Public Library.
