Van Meter, April 6, Special—Adam Shambaugh, one of the pioneer residents of this county, died Monday, April 4th, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Louie Jones, in Riverside, California. Mr. Shambaugh spent the fore part of the winter at the home of his son, Scott, in Houston, Texas, and then went to California about the middle of January. He has been ill much of the time he has been with his daughter, but was not considered in a critical condition until recently.

He came to this county in March, 1867, from Ohio, and has made this his home ever since. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Lyda Farris of Des Moines, Mrs. Lois Trussell of Houston, Texas, and Mrs. Louie Jones of Riverside, California, and four sons, Will of Lee township, Oren and Lloyd of Jefferson township, and Scott of Houston, Texas.
Definite funeral arrangements have not yet been made, but it is thought they will be held at Union Chapel church at 2 o’clock Sunday. All the children are returning home for the services.

Page 4Monday morning, April 4th, the Death Reaper claimed for his own one of Madison county’s oldest residents, Mr. Adam Shambaugh. He passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Louie S. Jones, in Riverside, California. Last November he left Iowa to spend the winter in a warmer climate. He went to Houston, Texas, to visit a daughter, Mrs. Lois Trussell, and a son, Scott Shambaugh. Here he remained until January 19th, when he left for Riverside, California. He journeyed alone and arrived safely on January 21st. Ten days later he was taken ill from which he but partially recovered, until March 11th, when he again took to his bed. Gradually the once strong frame weakened till as the sheaf of ripened grain ready for the garner, so he was ready to be garnered home.
Mr. Shambaugh was 86 years old. He came to Madison county in March, 1867, from Ohio 60 years ago, and settled in the home which he held until his passing. His was an active, upright and noble life, a worthy citizen of a great state.
Since Mrs. Shambaugh’s departure in 1915 he has lived among his children, seven of whom are living. The three daughters are Mrs. Lida Farris of Des Moines, Mrs. Lois Trussell of Houston, Texas, and Mrs. Louie S. Jones of Riverside, California; and four sons, W. C., Orin C. and Lloyd Shambaugh of Madison county, and Scott Shambaugh of Houston, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Jones accompanied the body from California to the old home where services were held at Union Chapel and interment made in the beautiful burying ground beside the church yard.
Funeral services were conducted by an old friend and former pastor, Rev. E. W. Curtis, of Des Moines, assisted by the present pastor, Rev. Hampshire, on Tuesday afternoon, April 12th.
The children were all present. That Scott might arrive in time for the funeral he came by airplane from Kansas City.
