HANNAH BELL HARDY

Hannah Bell was born in Pickaway county, Ohio, on January 11th, 1821, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. W. Crossley in Crawford township, Madison county, Iowa, on July 27th, 1906, aged eighty-five years, six months and sixteen days.

She was married to James W. Hardy, of Circleville, Ohio, on Sept. 11th, 1839 and lived with him until his death on Jan. 29th, 1890, more than fifty years. She died on the old home farm east of Patterson, where she had lived since about October 1851, or some fifty-five years. She was the last of the old settlers, who came to Madison county, Iowa, in the early '50's.

She was a woman of strong constitution. She was raised a Methodist but joined the Presbyterian church after her marriage to James W. Hardy in 1839; then she rejoined the Methodist church after his death in 1890. She was always a sturdy christian woman and she died strong in the faith of her Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.

She was the mother of eight children, three of whom, Mrs. Cynthia J. Crossley, J. W. Hardy and Mrs. Nancy Scriviner still survive her. She also left surviving her eight grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren, all of whom live in Madison and Warren counties.

Her funeral was held at the Methodist church of Patterson at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 29th, and her remains were laid to rest in the Montpelier cemetery beside her husband and son, John M. Hardy.
