Page 6Joseph Fletcher McDonald, son of Thomas and Eliza McDonald, was born in Guernsey county, Ohio, January 11, 1844 and died at his home near Winterset, August 14, 1916, aged 72 years, 7 months and 3 days.
He came to Madison County with his parents in 1863. He was married in Cambridge, Ohio, to Miss Theresa McAllister, October 18, 1875. They lived all their wedded life in the present home. Here their ten children, five sons and five daughters were born. Maggie and Herman, the eldest daughter and youngest son, departed this life in early childhood.
He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, four sons, John, Frank, Cyrus, and Edward; four daughters Addie, Ella, Effie, and Lilly; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. John McDonald, and four grandchildren: Alice, Merritt, Mabel and Joe; two brothers, William and Malcolm; one sister, Mrs. Harriet Bowlsby; besides many other relatives and a host of friends and neighbors.
In early manhood, before he left his Ohio home, he was baptized and received into the Presbyterian church and remained a faithful Christian till the close of his life. Many years ago he was stricken with sunstroke, from which he never fully recovered. On account of ill health, he has been unable to attend divine services and otherwise mingle with his fellow men in the usual social way, and for this reason, he was especially devoted to his home and family, and it was his earnest desire to rear his children in the fear of the Lord.Coordinator's note: Deceased's middle name taken from Iowa Delayed Certificate of Birth for daughter Ella.
