Charlotte Shaffer was born in Switzerland county, Indiana, in the year of 1838. She was the daughter of Betsy and Henry Shaffer and was the fourth of a family of nine children.

In 1854 she came to Madison county, Iowa, with a married sister, Mary Jane Richmond, making her home with this family until her parents came the following year, and Madison county has been her home ever since.

On June 30th, 1861, she was united in marriage with James H. Black and this couple were permitted to spend almost 52 years together. Forty-four years were spent at the old homestead in the West Star neighborhood in Douglas township, which Mr. Black purchased in 1856. Here she underwent the hardships and enjoyed the pleasures of those early pioneer days, ever ready to extend a kindly hand to all those about her.

In 1905 she and her husband moved to the home in Winterset, being no longer able to attend the duties required in a farm home.

Mr. Black passed away May 13th, 1913, and after some months of failing health her spirit passed out to the great beyond, early Sunday morning, August 7th, 1927, being in her 90th year.

She was the mother of seven children. One son, Frank, died in 1911. Those surviving are Abner, George and Harry Black, Mrs. Corgie Brown of Winterset, Mrs. Ella Hardy of Minneapolis, and Mrs. Jennie McGee of Denver, who has devotedly cared for her mother for almost three years.

There are also surviving, seven granddaughters, seven great grandchildren, one brother, and three sisters, and a host of relatives and friends.
