Death of Mrs. Martha Brown

Mrs. Martha E. Brown, who has been in poor health for several months, died Friday, July 15th, at the home of her son, Bradley Brown, in Earlham. Mrs. Brown had gone to Earlham to make a visit and her condition became so critical it was not deemed advisable to bring her to her home in the north part of Winterset.

She was eighty years of age. She came to this county in 1850 and lived on a farm in the Stringtown neighborhood. When she was 18 years of age, she was married to Charles Wheaton, and they had one son, Alva, who lives in California. In 1870 she was married to John L. Brown, who died in April, 1927. She is survived by nine children: Walter Brown of Patterson, Frank of Ruthven, Otie of Beaver, Wyoming, Allison of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. Allie Fowler of Moline, Illinois, Mrs. Della Fields of Winterset, Bradley of Earlham, Earl of Burnes, Oregon, and A. W. Wheaton of De Soto, California.

Funeral services were conducted at Tidrick’s funeral home, Sunday, July 17th, and the burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Martha E. Mills was born March 27th, 1847, at Tipton, Indiana and died at the home of her son, Bradley Brown, in Earlham, Iowa Friday, July 15th, 1927, at the age of 80 years, 3 months and 18 days.

She emigrated to Madison county in 1856 and settled on a farm near the Stringtown school in Douglas township. At 11 years of age she was converted and united with the Baptist church in Winterset.

When 19 years of age she was united in marriage to Charles Wheaton and to this union was born one son, Alva, now living in DeSota, California.

In 1870 she was married to John L. Brown and to this union were born nine children, all living except Eugene, who preceded her in death in 1909. Her husband departed this life on April 5th, 1927.

She was a devoted wife and mother and leaves to mourn her loss nine children, twenty-five grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren, two sisters and a host of relatives and friends.

Rev. Wm. Beers of Earlham conducted the service at the Tidrick funeral home in Winterset Sunday afternoon, July 17th, and the interment was in the Winterset cemetery.
