Winterset Madisonian – January 21, 1926
Pg 1

Jacob Harper, one of the old settlers in this county died Monday, January 18th at his home in Walnut township.

Jacob Enoch Harper, son of Wheatley and Mary Harper, was born in Des Moines, April 12, 1857. When less than one year old the family brought him to Madison county to the farm in Walnut township which he has ever since called home. He has stayed at the home place most of the time except a little while that he lived on his own land close by. While there he cared for his brother, Joe through a long illness which resulted in his death. “Jake”, as every one knew him never married nor had a family of his own to care for but he gave much of his life to others. He was the soul of honor and was ever kind and generous to take care of those in need. His was a nature that not only showed kindness in his every act but his true nobility was best shown by his kindly thoughts for every one he knew. With a heart like his he could have no enemies and he truly held the sincere record of all who knew him.

After six years of ill health he was taken worse two weeks before his death. He suffered much, and passed away on January 18, 1926, aged 68 years, 9 months and 6 days. He leaves one sister, Mrs. Mary Moore, and one brother, Will Harper in the home, and two brothers, Tony and Wheatley, living nearby, and other relatives and many friends.

Services were held at the St. Joseph’s Catholic church at 11:00 o’clock on Wednesday morning, conducted by Rev. Luke Plunkett. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
