Henry Hill was born in Yorkshire, England, April 27th, 1846, and died at his home in Winterset, May 9th, 1927, at the age of 81 years and 11 days.

Mr. Hill came to America with his parents at the age of four years. He spent his early childhood in the state of New York. He enlisted in the Civil War July 6th, 1863 in Lieut. William Pigott’s Co. F. 14th Regiment, New York heavy artillery. He was engaged in several of the battles and spent four months in Libby prison and was discharged August 26th, 1865, at Washington D. C.

Mr. Hill was united in marriage May 23rd, 1868, to Mary A. Pyle of Albion, Orleans county, New York. To this union were born nine children, of which all are living except one which died in infancy. When the children were small they moved to Iowa and spent several years on the farm, until Mrs. Hill’s health began to fail then they moved to Winterset in 1911. Mrs. Hill passed away November 19, 1914, after a lingering illness, in which Mr. Hill was so faithful in caring for her.

He was again united in marriage to Mary J. Rollstin of Winterset, June 15, 1916, who still survives. He is also survived by eight children: William Henry Hill of Alberta, Canada; Lilly Belle Farmer of Los Angeles, California; George L. Hill of Des Moines; Ida May Seibert of Delhi, New York; Edmund D. Hill of Detroit, Michigan; Marie E. Rollstin of Newton, Iowa; Edith Alice Kinnaird of Long Beach, California, and Joseph L. Hill of McAllen, Texas, and eighteen grandchildren, three sisters and a host of other relatives and friends.

In middle life Mr. Hill joined the Methodist church and was baptized in Union county. In later years he transferred his membership to the Church of Christ in Winterset of where he was a faithful member until the end. He also joined the I.O.O.F. at St. Charles about 30 years ago.

Funeral services were conducted at the Church of Christ at 11 o’clock Wednesday morning by Rev. F. Clare McCallon, and burial was in the Rock City cemetery.
