Memorial services for Jim Briggs, 95, of Stratford, formerly of Jefferson, will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at First Baptist Church in Jefferson. Interment of his cremains will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in the Winterset Cemetery, Winterset, Iowa. No visitation is planned.

James Hubert Briggs died December 27, 2010 at the Stratford Nursing and Rehab Center in Stratford, Iowa. He was 95 years of age. Jim was born as Hubert Briggs on December 31, 1914 in Winterset, Iowa to Lee and Daisy Robbins Briggs. He was the youngest of three boys. He graduated from Winterset High School and resided in Winterset most of his life. As a young man he legally changed his name to James Hubert Briggs.

Jim moved to Panora in 1980. In 1990 he married Beverly Blackford, and in 2003 Jim and Beverly moved to Jefferson, Iowa. They attended First Baptist Church in Jefferson.

Over his lifetime Jim farmed the family farm, and owned and operated a western wear shop. He was involved with the Winterset Square Dance Club. Jim loved big band music and was an avid dancer at the Val Air and Lake Robbins ballrooms.

For over 30 years, Jim raised Appaloosa horses and for several years was a national horse show judge. He taught horsemanship to hundreds of boys and girls through the 4-H equestrian program.

Jim worked for eight years as a rural postman, and for seventeen years at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Des Moines. Jim served his country during World War II as a medic in the European conflict. He was a life member of the VFW.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gerald and Alfred. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Briggs of Stratford, IA; daughter Marlys Mantel (Jake) of Redlands, CA and son John Briggs of Pasadena, CA; three step-daughters: Darcie Blackford of Scottsdale, AZ; Jeannie Solorzano (David) of Bagley, IA and Sherri Lyons (Shawn) of Bayard, IA; 9 grandchildren two great-grandchildren.
