James Ratliff Cox, an old settler of Penn township, died last Thursday, March 17th, at his home near Earlham, at the age of 76 years. He came to Madison county with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Cox, when he was eighteen years of age.

He was married to Miss Della Bellows in 1872 and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1922. Mr. Cox is survived by his wife and four children, Mrs. Linda Marston, Edd and Everett Cox, all of Penn township, and Mrs. Stegall of Earlham. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Linda Rogers, of Winterset.

Mr. Cox had been in failing health for the past three years and two weeks ago he became much worse. Hardening of the arteries caused his death.

Funeral services were held at the Penn Center church, Saturday afternoon at two o’clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Corle. Interment was made in the Penn Center cemetery.
