John Shoff, son of Washington and Martha Shoff, was born in Geurnsey county, Ohio, September 6th, 1852. His mother and father died when he was very young, and when still a small boy he went to live with relatives in Illinois. He lived there until he came to Madison county, in 1875. He was united in marriage to Mary Banker, in 1877. To this union one son was born, Lem, now living in Winterset.

They lived on their farm near Pitzer until 30 years ago, when they moved to Winterset, where Mrs. Shoff died on September 16th, 1909. Mr. Shoff became deputy sheriff when M. L. Silliman was sheriff of the county. After that for nearly twenty years he was engaged in selling real estate, first with Hamilton Brothers and later with E. E. McCall. He was for many years a member of the Masonic and Woodmen lodges and became a member of the Winterset U. P. church in 1902.

In his earlier years he was known as one of the most genial and friendly men in the county, everyone knew him. Seven years ago he had a stroke of paralysis and since then has been able to get around very little. He passed away in his son’s home on March 7th, 1927, aged 74 years, 6 months, 1 day. He leaves besides his son, one grandson, Herman Shoff, of Dexter, other distant relatives and many friends.

Rev. W. Z. Allen conducted the service in Tidrick’s Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon, March 8th, and the interment was in the Winterset cemetery.
