Mrs. Celia Smith Miles, one of the pioneer residents of Patterson, died early Tuesday morning, March 8th. She had been in good health all winter until she contracted a cold and pneumonia a short time ago. This with a stroke of apoplexy caused her death. She was nearly 85 years of age.

Mrs. Miles was born in Springfield, Ohio, in 1842, and came to Des Moines with her parents in 1856. She was married to George Gentle, who during the Civil war died in the Andersonville prison. Two children born to Mr. and Mrs. Gentle, died in infancy. In 1865 she was married to Isaiah Miles and only two of the five children born to them now survive Mrs. Miles: Mrs. Butler Stout, and Ernest H. Miles, both of Patterson.

Mr. and Mrs. Miles came to Patterson in 1869, and have always been active in the community life. Mr. Miles died in 1910.

Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Frank Moore were held at the home in Patterson, Wednesday, March 9th, and burial was made at the Montpelier cemetery.

Celia Smith Miles was born April 2nd, 1842, at Springfield, Ohio, and with her parents came to Des Moines in 1856. When sixteen years old she united with the Methodist church of which she has since been a loyal member.

In 1860 she was married to George Gentle, who, during the Civil war, died in the Andersonville prison. Two children were born to this union, both dying in infancy. On October 2nd, 1865, she was united in marriage to Isaiah Miles. Five children: Etta, Clara, Jessie, Earnest H., and Eunice Olive, of whom only the last two are living were born to this union. Mr. Miles, also a Civil war veteran, passed away on April 1st, 1910.

Mrs. Miles came with the family to Madison county in 1869 and has been known as among the pioneers of the county and the community. After a short illness she died at her home in Patterson on March 8th, 1927, being 84 years, 11 months and 6 days of age. She leaves to mourn her death, one daughter, Mrs. Butler Stout, and a son, Earnest Miles, both of Patterson; also a large number of grandchildren and a host of friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were conducted by the local Methodist pastor from the home in Patterson, on March 9th at 2 o’clock. Burial was made at Montpelier.
