Joseph Hiatt died in Clarinda, Wednesday morning, February 9th, at the age of 73 years. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Hiatt, who settled in Peru in the year 1857. Mr. Hiatt has lived most of his life in Madison county. A stroke of apoplexy about ten days ago caused his death.

His body was brought to the Tidrick funeral home and the services will be held in the church in Peru Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock, by Rev. Frederick Cooper of Truro, assisted by Rev. Cottingham of Peru. Burial will be made in the Peru cemetery.

Mr. Hiatt is survived by two brothers, N. W. Hiatt of Peru, and Sylvanus Hiatt of Long Beach, California; two sisters, Mrs. Olive Silverthorn of Webster township and Sarah Ellen Hiatt of this place; and two daughters, Mrs. Leland Spaulding of Scott township and Mrs. Velma Hough of Adair county.

Joseph Nelson Hiatt, son of Rebecca and Jesse Hiatt, was born in Grand county, Indiana, on November 24th, 1852.

He came with his parents to Madison county, Iowa in 1857. He was reared on a farm near Peru and spent the most of his life in the county.

When a young man he was married to Rhoda Fennimore and to this union were born Beulah Mae and Everett William, who died in infancy, and those remaining are Mrs. Velma Spaulding of Walnut township and Mrs. Eula Huff of Lennox, Iowa.

He was a practical farmer and highly esteemed by most all who knew him well. He died February 8th, 1927, at the age of 74 years, 2 months and 14 days.

Rev. Frederick Cooper of Truro, assisted by Rev. C. D. Cottinham of Peru, conducted the service in the Peru M.E. church on Friday afternoon, February 11th, and the interment was made in the Peru cemetery.
