NORMA CORNICK, WINTERSET

Norma M. Cornick, 94, of Winterset died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at Winterset Care Center South.

Visitation was held Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare, Winterset. A memorial service was held today (Wednesday, Jan. 19) at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare. Memorial contributions to the Winterset Community Educational Fund or the Animal Rescue League will be accepted in Norma’s name.

Norma M. Cornick was born July 18, 1916, to Nellie and Jahu M. Strawn near St. Charles. She graduated from Indianola High School and later from Simpson College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She was a member of Theta Upsilon Sorority and Sigma Gamma Rho. After graduation, she taught in Carlisle.

The following year she taught in Mount Union, Iowa, where she met her husband, Gerald Cornick. She continued to work in Mount Union for three years before they were married on May 3, 1941, in Excelsior Springs, Mo. They moved to Winterset in 1954; she taught English and commerce at Winterset High School, and retired in May 1983.

She was a member of The Society of Mayflower Descendants, Winterset Legion Auxiliary, 500 Club, the First United Presbyterian Church and the Retired Teacher’s Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Norma Strawn Cornick was born July 18, 1916, in Warren County, Iowa. The daughter of the late J.M. Strawn and Nellie Bumbarger, she attended school in Warren County and later graduated with a B.A. from Simpson College in Indianola.

She worked as a high school Business and English teacher for 39 years in Mt. Union, Carlisle, and Winterset before retiring.

Norma was a member of The Society of Mayflower Descendants; Winterset Legion Auxiliary; 500 Club; Theta Upsilon Sorority, ISEA and NEA; the First United Presbyterian Church; and the Retired Teacher's Association.

On Saturday, January 15, 2011, Norma died peacefully at Winterset Care Center South. She was 94. Preceding her in death was her husband, Gerald Cornick. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends. Visitation 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday with a memorial service 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Memorials to the Winterset Community Educational Foundation or the Animal Rescue League will be accepted.
