Michael R. Gabbert, son of Jacob and Mary Bonine Gabbert, was born in Madison county, Iowa, May 22nd, 1857, and departed this life at Winterset, February 4th, 1927. When a boy he attended the public school in Madison county, then for some time he attended Penn college and Oskaloosa college. Upon the death of his father in 1881, he gave up his farm work in Nebraska and returned home to take over the farm work and to help care for his mother and sisters. This relation as homemaker for his mother continued up to the time of her death in 1913.

His living sisters: Mrs. Elizabeth Gowin, Des Moines; Mrs. Harriet Foster, Sioux City; Mrs. O. C. Morgan, Pacific Beach, California, and Mrs. C. F. Jones, Stuart, join in a generous tribute of appreciation of him for the way he sacrificed his own hopes of a home and family for the sake of the mother and the children remaining at home after the father’s departure from his place of responsibility and toil. Two sisters and five brothers have gone on before: Mrs. A. W. Meyer, Ponca, Nebraska; Mrs. William Conway, Casey, Iowa; James and George, who died in young manhood; and the other three, who died in infancy. Two brothers, Alonzo E. of Fairview, and Thomas G. Gabbert of Ventura, California, survive.

Mr. Gabbert made a home for his nephew, Charles Gowin, who later entered the United Brethren ministry and is now stationed at Bristow, Iowa. As it was said of Paul, so it may be said of him, “He got a man to the ministry, or helped to do so.”

He became a Christian in his young manhood, took his letter from this church when he entered school at Oskaloosa. He with another young man organized a Sunday School in Nebraska, which later became a preaching place and finally a church was organized there as a result of their work and leadership. He was affectionately known to his many neighbors simply as “Mike.” He was always ready to help in the time of need. He was a true friend, a devoted son and brother, a loyal neighbor, and a man of large capacity and ability in his chosen work,------ and husbandry.

Funeral services were held at the Fairview church February 8th at 2 o’clock by the pastor, Rev. James Walls.
