John Riser was born in Berne, Switzerland the 24th day of November 1843.

Here he grew to manhood and received his education. He was married to Maria Huntziker, Nov. 17, 1864. Here they established their home where their two oldest children were born.

Realizing the opportunities that America offered, they crossed the Atlantic in 1869 and settled in Ohio.

In 1874 they moved to Clermont, Iowa, and made their home there for many years.

In 1902 they moved to Earlham, Iowa, where they have since resided and where his death occurred at noon, Dec. 17, 1926, at the age of 83 years and 23 days in the presence of his family.

Unto Mr. and Mrs. Riser have been born ten children seven of whom are still living: Caroline of Clermont, Iowa, Albert, Julia, Bertha, Lydia, John and Evangaline all of Earlham, Alfred, Frederick J. and Edward preceded their father in death.

Mr. and Mrs. Riser celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary the 17th of November of this year, a privilege which comes to very few.

Mr. Riser was a member of the Reformed Lutheran church and was also a member of the Order of the Free and Accepted Masons, having taken the work of the 32nd degree.

He leaves to mourn his death his faithful wife, seven children, nineteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He had been in ill health for several years and has been faithfully and lovingly cared for by his wife and daughter, Julia. Mr. Riser was a great reader and among his favorite poems was Longfellow’s “Psalm of Life.”

A short service was held Sunday afternoon at the home after which the remains were taken to the Methodist church. A splendid sermon was preached by Rev. Beers and a male quartet rendered beautiful selections. The Masonic Order then conducted their service after which the remains were laid to rest in the Earlham Cemetery beside two of his sons.
