Thursday, January 6, 1927, page 4John Edward Davis, only child of Mr. and Mrs. Wilton and Joan Davis, was born at Newton, Jasper county, Iowa, August 27th, 1872, and died at his home at Winterset, Madison county, December 28th, 1926, at the age of 54 years, 4 months and 1 day.
When Mr. Davis was about one year old the Davis family moved to Kansas, where they remained until he was 9 years of age. They returned to Jasper county where his education was completed. He graduated from the high school at Newton and attended the business college at that place.
He was united in marriage to Mary Mayer when a young man. To this union were born two children, Mrs. Marie Madoll of Gilman, Iowa, and Mrs. Cecil Trotter of Newton. When the daughters were twelve and fourteen years old, their mother passed away.
In 1923 Mr. Davis was married to Mrs. Mary E. Zody, who tenderly cared for him during his last sickness.
Mr. Davis pursued the art of painting and decorating, digressing to the postmaster at Metz, Iowa, for five years from 1905 to 1910. About ten years ago he went to Cedar Rapids, where he was employed as coach painter in the Interurban car shops.
For years he has been a believer in Christ and the Bible, developing the attributes of kindness and patience, helpful to others, and a lover of righteousness. Though never identifying himself with any sect, his strong faith in Christ led him to be much in prayer and a reader of the Bible at every opportunity. He desired his home to be a house of prayer.
Last September Mr. Davis and wife came to Winterset to be near Mrs. Davis’ daughter, Mrs. A. Hildebrand, whom he cherished as his own child.
After several weeks of illness he passed away at his home Tuesday, December 28th, at 5:30 a.m.
He leaves his wife, daughters, cousins, other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were conducted at his home Thursday, December 30th, at 2 p.m. Sermon was by Asa E. Smith, V. D. M. of the Church of Jesus Christ. Interment was in the local cemetery.
