JOSEPH CHILDERS

Joseph Childers was born March 9, 1854 in Champaign county, Illinois and died at Winterset, Iowa, October 10, 1915, aged 61 years, 7 months and one day. His family moved to Iowa when he was five years old and Madison county has been his home ever since, excepting three years when he had a residence in Des Moines.

On Dec. 7, 1876, he married Mary Jane Stephenson at Winterset. Eight children were born to them. One died in infancy and Carl died in 1902. Of the living, the wife and three children, Ernest, Harry and Everett live at Winterset; Mrs. Ralph Green at Des Moines; Ersie at Mason City and Earl, who is upon the U. S. battleship, Arkansas, now in New York harbor. He also has six grand children living. All of the children were present at the funeral, except the sailor lad, who could not arrive in time. One sister, Mrs. William Hamner, lives in Winterset.

The friends living away from Winterset who were present, were as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cram, Mrs. Wm. Cram, Frank Childers, and T. T. Davis of Des Moines; Edna Hamner of Creston.

In 1900 the writer received him and his wife into the fellowship of the First Christian church at Winterset. During the three years' absence at Des Moines, he affiliated with the Castle Memorial U.B. Church but returned his membership to the church of his choice last winter. In his christian life he was not demonstrative but always prompt in doing his part.

For a long time his health has not been in the best condition, yet the end came speedily and unexpected by all. He was an honored member of Madison camp, Woodmen of World. The funeral was preached at the First Christian church of Winterset and the sermon preached by his former pastor, Rev. Follansbee of Des Moines.
