Death of Phillip Moore

Phillip Moore, an old citizen of this county, died Wednesday evening about six o’clock at his home in Scott township, at the age of 87 years. He had been in poor health for a long time. He is an old settler, having lived in Winterset for a number of years, and later moving to his farm south of town.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen Moore, and five children, Mrs. Frank Hartman of Creston, Mrs. Ollie Morris of Nebraska, Homer Moore of California, and Emma and Marion at home.

Funeral services will be held at the Primitive Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, and burial will be made in that cemetery.

Phillip C. Moore was born in Green county, Indiana, February 6th, 1839. He came to Madison county in 1852 and was married to Mary Ellen Crawford on March 7th, 1867, their marriage taking place in the Crawford home which was just a little way from their present home near Buffalo Bridge.

To this union eight children were born, three dying in infancy and the other are the daughter, Emma, and son, Marion in the home, Mrs. Ollie Morris of Seneca, Nebraska, Mrs. Pearl Hartman of Creston, Iowa, and son, Homer of Stockton, California.

The family have always lived in or near Winterset except seven years spent in Seneca, Nebraska. Mr. Moore worked for many years in the old Buffalo Mill and later for many years in the mill and elevator at Winterset.

He joined the Primitive Baptist church in 1866 and has remained a faithful member, and a firm believer in salvation by grace. In his later years he has spent much time in prayer for others.

For the past eight years he has been in failing health and was confined to his bed for the last six weeks. He made the arrangements for his funeral and welcomed his friends when they came remaining cheerful to the end. He was a kind father and a faithful husband and passed away in his home near Winterset on June 23rd, 1926, aged 87 years, 4 months and 17 days.

He leaves besides his wife and children, ten grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Anna Bryant, and other relatives and a host of friends.

A short service was conducted at the house and at the Baptist church north of town, Sunday, June 27th, at 2:30 and burial was made in that cemetery. The service was conducted by Elders N. J. Wood and A. W. Thompson.
