Winterset Madisonian – May 20, 1926
Pg 3

James F., son of John and Julia Armstrong, was born in Holmes county, Ohio, January 19th, 1847. When he was seven years old the family moved to Madison county, settling on the Fred Wilkinson farm in Scott township. They later moved to the Lute Harrell farm, where they were living when James enlisted in the army at the age of 17. He served thirteen months, until the close of the war, in the 23rd Iowa regiment, Co. H.

He was married to Sylvia Belles, April 29th, 1869. To this union eleven children were born: three dying in infancy and four of the other have preceded Mr. Armstrong in death: Mrs. Nora Finney, Mrs. Sarah Orrison and two sons, George and Fred. Those surviving are Mary in the home, John of Topeka, Kansas, James of Des Moines and Mrs. Frank Brown of Winterset.

After their marriage they lived ten years on a farm in Madison county, then moved to Topeka, where Mr. Armstrong worked many years for the Santa Fe Railroad. They returned to Winterset six years ago, making their home here a little more than a year ago when they moved to Des Moines.

Mr. Armstrong was for many years a member of the G.A.R. post in Topeka.

He united with the Evangelical church when a young man and in the last months he daily expressed his trust in his Savior. His was a long life filled with friendliness and helpfulness to others. He suffered with his eyes for a great many years, and in the last years almost entirely lost his sight.

He was taken sick five years ago and after much suffering, which he bore with wonderful patience, he passed away at his home in Des Moines on May 17th, 1926, aged 79 years, two months and 28 days. He leaves besides his wife and four children, eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and one brother, George of Scott township, and many other relatives and many friends.

Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
