Mae LaPointe Burhans, 92, of St. Charles died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010, at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, at the Assumption Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Churchville, Iowa, with Father Eugene Koch officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Warren County.
Mae was born on June 15, 1918, at Hartford, Connecticut to Sylvio and Estelle (Dauphinais) LaPointe. She was married on April 29, 1941, in Hartford, Conn., to Richard Charles Burhans. They moved to Des Moines in 1953 with her husband’s career involvement with the Coca-Cola Bottling Company. She had been a resident of Madison County since 1964. Early in her life she had worked as a secretary for several insurance companies in Des Moines. She had been a member of the Assumption Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Churchville, volunteered for several years at the Madison County Historical Complex as well as other community and church organizations, she loved to travel, enjoyed card and board games with friends, and was quite involved keeping up with all her family.
Mae is survived by her children, Gail (Russell) Weisinger of Baraga, Mich.; Janet (David) Wheatley of Auburn, Calif.; Richard (Carla) Burhans of St. Charles; and Jim (Sarina) Burhans of Alexandria, La.; sisters, Sister Bernice LaPointe of Hartford, Conn., and Lea Maloy of Farmington, Conn.; brother, Robert LaPointe of Brewer, Maine; grandchildren, Patty Loosemore, Patrick Reilley, Pamela Haack, Julie Rasanen, Chris Wheatley, Eric Wheatley, Heidi Burhans, Lyndsay Cannoy, Mary Cantu, Maggie Strable, Brandy Cunningham, and Kristin Burhans; great-grandchildren Aaron, Courtney, Miles, Nathan, Justin, Alexis, Jaden, Jaxon, Josh, Rebecca, Annaleese, Presley, Jaycie, Charles, Porter, Braxton, Audrey and Asher; and great-great grandchildren, Austin, Ryan, Jayden and Tate.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sylvio and Estelle (Dauphinais) LaPointe; husband, Richard Burhans; son, Robert Michael Burhans; sisters, Sister Genevieve LaPointe and Evelyn LaPointe; brother, William LaPointe; and longtime companion, Joe Hutton.
Visitation will be today (Wednesday, Dec. 22) from 2-8 p.m. at the Assumption Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Churchville, with family receiving friends from 4-7 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m. Memorials given to the family will be directed to the Madison County (Memorial Hospital) Health Trust or the Madison County Historical Complex.
