Mortuary - Sarah (Cox) Brittain

Mrs. Sarah (Cox) Brittain was born in Clayton county, Ohio, Dec. 6, 1847, died in Dayton, Ohio, April 25, 1915, aged 67 years, 4 months and 19 days.

In 1856 she came to Madison county, Iowa, with her parents and her home has since been in the county, and for the recent past years she has made her home with her son, J. E. Brittain.

On Oct. 18, 1866, she was married to Pleasant C. Brittain. To this union were born five daughters and one son, all of whom are living and were present, but Susie. Besides a host of friends, she leaves to mourn her departure six brothers, four sisters, 27 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

When 19 years of age, she was converted and joined the Baptist church. More than thirty years ago she became a member of the United Brethren church where she held her membership at the time of her death.

November last she went to Dayton, Ohio, to visit friends and relatives and to spend the winter with her youngest daughter, Mrs. Chas. S. Gowin, at whose home she bid adieu to earthly surroundings and went to her home not made with hands for which she had been preparing almost her entire lifetime.

The funeral sermon was preached in the Friends' church by her former pastor and friend of the family for more than 25 years, the Rev. Wm. F. Cronk, D.D., of Des Moines, state superintendent of the United Brethren church in Iowa. Interment was made in the Earlham cemetery by the side of her husband.

The names of the children of Mrs. Sarah Brittain are: Ruth, Canmore, Canada; Allie, Winterset, Iowa; Susie, Harlis, Minn.; Jennie, Colome, S.D.; Ida, Dayton, Ohio; J. E., Earlham, Iowa.
