FRED BOWLSBY TAKES OWN LIFE

Despondent Over Business, Former Winterset Man Inhales Gas

Fred A. Bowlsby, a former resident and for many years a rural mail carrier at Winterset, ended his life by inhaling gas at his home in Des Moines on Tuesday morning. Mr. Bowlsby, who was born in Scott township, this county, was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Bowlsby. He moved to Winterset from the farm to take the position of rural mail carrier, a position he filled with fidelity for many years. He moved to Des Moines about six years ago. The following account of his death is given in the Des Moines Tribune:

“Despondency over business affairs is believed to have induced Fred A. Bowlsby, 45 years old, to commit suicide this morning at 4 o’clock at his residence, 3011 University avenue. Bowlsby has recently suffered a nervous breakdown due to financial worries. He was the owner of a grocery store at Forty-second and Center streets and inability to sell the business is thought to have prompted the suicide. Death was due to asphyxiation. Bowlsby turned on the gas in the kitchen, using a blanket thrown over his head and the stove to retain the fumes. Bowlsby recently bought his grocery store after having clerked for five years in the Hugh Anderson grocery. Mrs. Bowlsby states that they had been trying to sell the business for some time.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. F. A. Bowlsby and one son, Arthur C. Bowlsby of Fonda. Coroner Guy Clift pronounced death suicide by asphyxiation.”

The body was brought here for burial today. Services were held at the Methodist church and burial in the Winterset cemetery.
