DEATH OF W. O. LUCAS

Well Known Attorney Is Victim of Erysipelas.

W. O. Lucas died at his home on East Court avenue, Sunday morning after a three weeks illness from erysipelas.

Mr. Lucas was born in Douglas township in 1866. His parents, Wm. G. and Hannah Bardrick Lucas, were among the early settlers of this community. After graduating from the law department of the state university at Iowa City in 1889, he took up the practice of law, which he has since followed here in Winterset.

Few men from the business circles of Winterset will be more missed, for he gave unselfishly and with unusual fidelity, much of his time to public service. He had served in the capacity of city attorney, mayor and councilman at different times. For 37 years he served as secretary of the Winterset school board, and men high in the educational affairs of the state have expressed the opinion that he was one of, if not the best official in that capacity in the state of Iowa.

He was active in the local and state organizations of the Knights of Pythias.

Remaining members of the family are his wife, Harriet Bridges Lucas; one daughter, Mrs. Frank Root of Des Moines, and one son, Robert of Milwaukee.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by his pastor, Rev. David J. Shenton. The Knights of Pythias were in charge of the ceremonies at the grave.
