Mary Ann Smith, daughter of Th----- and Martha Smith, was born May 14, 1847 in Wayne county, Ohio. When she was but a small child, her parents came to Marion county, Iowa, and resided at Wheeling. Later the family moved to Missouri, returning to Iowa in 1862, and here she grew to womanhood.

On March 4, 1867 she was united in marriage to George Johnston, who preceded her in death, having been called on May 15, 1915. This union was blessed with three children: Thomas, who died in infancy; Mary Alice, who died at the age of 46 in Columbus, Mont., and Martha Anetta, at whose home near Winterset, her last illness occurred.

On Thanksgiving Day, 1924, she suffered a hemorrhage of the brain, which paralyzed her right side. At first, hopes were held for a partial recovery but she gradually grew weaker, and on Wednesday night, Jan. 14th, she entered upon her last sleep and on Saturday morning at 9 o’clock, her spirit was called home. She and her husband were among the pioneers of Madison county, having moved to the old Sturman place, northeast of Winterset in 1876. In 1877 they located six miles west of Winterset, and at this homestead she passed on leaving to mourn her death, four sisters, two brothers, one daughter and four grandchildren.

She was baptized and became a member of the West Star Methodist church in 1879. In later years her membership was transferred to the First M. E. church of Winterset.

Funeral services were held at the M.E. church in Winterset Monday, Jan. 19th, at 1:30. Burial was made in the Rock City cemetery.
