DR. SPENCER “DOC” HULL, GIBSON, IOWA

Dr. Spencer “Doc” G. Hull, DVM, 86, of Gibson, Iowa, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, at the Mercy Medical Center in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 11, at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Paul Nus officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in the Montpelier Cemetery near Patterson. Military rites will be given by members of American Legion, D.A.V. and V.F.W. of Winterset. Visitation will be Friday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with the family present at the funeral chapel from 4-7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives.

Memorials may be made to the fire and rescue of your choice.

He was born June 21, 1924, the son of William Henry and Bessie B. Graham Hull at Oskaloosa He graduated from the Winterset High School with the class of 1941. Following graduation he attended Simpson College until he entered into military service in 1943. He served in the Army Air Corp for 20 months at the 14th Air Corp. base of the Flying Tigers in Kunming, China until his discharge in 1945. Following his discharge he returned to Simpson College.

On Aug.18, 1946, Spencer was united in marriage to Maxine L. Harpole at Patterson. He then furthered his education at Iowa State University, graduating in 1950 with his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. He then moved to What Cheer where he established a veterinary practice. In 1964 the family moved to their farm near Gibson. In 1983 he went to work in the FSIS of the USDA as a Veterinary Supervisor, he retired in January of 2003. Spencer worked his last day as an assistant supervisor in January of 2008. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Gibson, James Murphy Post 319 of the American Legion at Keswick and the NRA. He and his wife, Maxine, have had a home in Winfield, Iowa, since 1990.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine, of over 64 years; two sons – Darrin (Kathleen) Hull of Salem, Wisc., and Doran (Toni) Hull of Gibson; six grandchildren – Lt. Jason (Katie) Hull of Pensacola, Fla.; Travis Hull of Madison, Wisc.; Christine (Andy) Nolen of Wauwatosta, Wisc.; Heather (Eric) Held of What Cheer, Ryan (Kandi) Hull of Barnes City and Natalie (JD Reed) Hull of Oskaloosa; three great-grandsons – Corwin Hull, Spencer Held and Jacob Held; and a step great-granddaughter, Victoria Pfannebecker.
