Thursday, November 6, 1924Grant Kail was born in Cumberland County, Ill., near the little town of Neoga, on Sept. 16, 1865. He moved with his parents Henry and Nancy Kail to Iowa when he was only three and one-half years of age. The family settled on a farm in Wayne Co. at first, but later came to Madison Co. where he grew to manhood on his father’s farm south of Earlham. He had a happy, cheerful disposition and was of a strictly -----, very generous nature, never refusing to help those who were in need. He was loved by all of his friends and relatives.
He was united in marriage to Mary Orahood of Earlham on Feb. 12, 1892. The first nine years of their married life were spent on a farm out north of Earlham, after which they moved into town where they lived for six years. The next four years were spent on their farm south of Redfield and at the end of that time he was obliged to leave the farm on account of failing health. They then located in Lohrville, Iowa where he was engaged in the auctioneering and real estate business and where they have lived ever since. During the past two years he has been unable to pursue any business activities.
Col. Kail, as he was called by his friends was a good citizen and a splendid Christian man who was always ready and willing to do the will of his Master in any way that he could. He gave his heart to God in early manhood and has always clung to the wonderful truth ever since.
On Tuesday morning, Nov. 4, 1924 he passed peacefully on to the great beyond, where the dear father, mother and three brothers are waiting for him. His illness was long and lingering and his suffering was almost constant, but he bore it all very cheerfully and with a Christian fortitude that was most remarkable.
He leaves to mourn his departure, the faithful wife who has nursed him through these months with such loving and tender care, four sisters and one brother Mrs. M. O. Evans of Dodson, Montana, Mrs. B. N. Jewett of Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. J. H. Junkin of Earlham, and Mr. Emmett F. Kail of Twin Falls, Idaho. Mrs. J. H. Junkin of Earlham was at his bedside with the wife and good neighbors at the time of his passing on.
The remains were taken to their old home town of Earlham, where the funeral service was held from the Presbyterian church on Thursday afternoon. It was conducted by Rev. ----- Johnson of Redfield, a former pastor of Col. Kail, assisted by Rev. P. W. Fink, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Earlham. The tired sole was laid to rest in the Earlham cemetery.
