Hazel Ellen Doak was born near Van Meter, June 9, 1892. The first 16 years of her life were spent in Jefferson township, where she attended the North River school. After the death of her father in 1908, she moved with her mother to Scott township.

July 17, 1910 she was married to Mertie Brock. In the year 1919 she with her husband and daughter, Maxine, united with the Elm Grove M. E. church. When she and her husband moved near Winterset, she attended the M. E. church in Winterset, and later, when they moved west of town, the family united with the West Star M. E. church.

The last four years of her life were full of suffering, during which time the efforts of the best physicians failed to stop the ravages of the dread disease, pernicious anemia.

Mrs. Brock always made friends wherever she lived and there are many who sympathized with her in her suffering, and who now mourn the loss of one who must die so young. Her father, mother, one brother and one sister have preceded her in death. She leaves her husband, two daughters, Maxine and Inez; four brothers, Frank of Dalles, Ore.; Mert of Chattanooga, Tenn.; Charles of Jefferson township and Tom of Scott township; and one sister, Mrs. Jennie Sidell of Des Moines.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. L. M. Kirby at West Star church and the body was laid to rest in the U. B. cemetery, northeast of Winterset.
