Page 8Joseph Ellsworth Gettys was born at Rushville, Jasper county, Iowa, Sept. 4, 1862, where he lived until eight years of age, removing at that time with his parents to western Kansas, where he received his early training and grew to manhood. He returned to Jasper county in 1895, where he resumed his occupation of farming. He was married to Miss Margaret McWhirter at Metz, Iowa, April 15, 1903, where they lived until removing to their present home in 1906. To this union were born three children: Beatrice Pearl, Maurice Ellsworth and Margaret Josephine.
He was converted in a camp meeting at Prairie View, Kansas, June 1890. He was baptized by his brother, Rev. J. R. Gettys, Sept. 4, 1890, at that time joining the M. E. church at Prairie View. At the time of his death, he with all his family were members of the M. E. church at Truro. He was a consistent Christian. His life was an open book. Hypocrisy and deception were unknown to his nature. Poverty and distress never applied to him in vain. -------------------- with God himself, his family and his neighbors. He was a tender, loving husband and father and his place will be missed by those who loved him best. He came to the end of his earthly career at his home two and one-half miles north and one mile east of Truro, May 19, 1924, after much intense and patient suffering, at the age of 61 years, 8 months and 15 days.
He leaves to mourn their loss, a faithful, loving wife and the three loving children, three sisters and four brothers: Mrs. Isabelle Lockard of Goodland, Kans.; Rev. J. R., of University Place, Nebr.; Rev. W. W. of McCool Junction, Nebr.; Walter C., of Boulder Creek, Calif.; Edward J., of St. Charles; Mrs. Maud Graham of Arnold, Nebr.; and Mrs. Minnie Snyder of Newton, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral services were held in the M. E. church at Truro, conducted by his pastor, Rev. C. A. Calkins, Wednesday afternoon, May 21st. The body was taken to the St. Charles cemetery, followed by a great concourse of relatives, friends and neighbors, by whom he was highly esteemed, and with the beautiful church ceremony was laid to his last resting place.
