Deaths

Samuel Benson, son of Samuel and Angelina Benson was born near Ainsworth, at Washington county, Iowa, August 15, 1870. When a young child, the family moved to Madison county. They lived in the county until Sammy, (as he was always called) was 10 years old, when they moved to Winterset.

He was married to Mary Martino in 1889 and to this union eight children were born, two died in infancy and those living are: Mrs. Mabel Wheaton, Mrs. Lena Phillips, Mrs. Ruth Stein and Ralph Benson all of Des Moines; and Mrs. Helen Bedwell of Winterset and Raymond still at home. Mr. Benson passed away April 18, 1924, aged 53 years, 8 months and 3 days. He leaves besides his wife and six children, two brothers Milton of Atlanta, Ga., and Ed., of Winterset; and two sisters, Mrs. Lum Miller and Scott Hilderbrand of Winterset.

Until a few years ago, when stricken with sickness from which he never fully recovered, Mr. Benson was one of the best known men in Madison county. His ready wit and his genial good nature won him a warm place in the hearts of old and young, rich and poor. He was an excellent worker in both cement and plaster and every place he worked he made new friends. Even the little children remembered and loved him.

He never united with the church but in his last years many changes came into his life and he felt that he had made his peace with God, and knowing his kindness to others, remember God’s words where he says: “As ye have don it unto the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”
