Charles J. Buchanan was born June 17, 1852, and was the second of eight children of John James and Lucy Knight Buchanan of St. Francisville, Ill. Though his mother died when he was only three years old, the home was continued intact and he was brought up according to the loyal principles of the Christian home; and made his profession of faith in Jesus Christ while yet in his youth, becoming a member of the Pisgah Presbyterian church. His Christian profession was a definite reality and he lived it throughout his life in a genuinely upright way. In 1873, when he was 21 years old, he came with his brother, George, to Iowa. On Dec. 23, 1880 he married Mary R. McDowell. Their home has always been in Madison county. Thirty-seven years were spent on their farm between Patterson and St. Charles. Mr. Buchanan’s death, April 17, 1924, is the first break in the family.

These are the children: Mrs. Mabel Sayre of Van Meter, John I., Mrs. Clyde E. Mills, Chester R., Mrs. Beulah Z. Anderson, Mrs. Martha J. Smith, Mrs. Hazel M. Sumner and Charles Mac, all of St. Charles, besides his faithful wife, the eight children and nine grandchildren, he is survived by these brothers and sisters: Mrs. Addie Andrews, St. Francisville, Ill.; Mrs. Bettie Weddell, Orville, Minn., and Chester Buchanan, all of Bridgeport, Ill. His brother, George, who came west with him, died three years ago.

At the time of his marriage, Mrs. Buchanan identified himself with his wife in the United Presbyterian church, in which he has continued a most loyal and faithful member. In public life, he was trusted with the offices of president of the school board and justice of the peace for many years. He was not one gifted with speech in public assembly, but he was a man who excelled in speaking to individuals about the religion of his Savior. For a score of years he was a trustee and for the past five years, new world movement officer of his church. His friends were measured by his acquaintances. He was a veritable father in the church, and its interests were much upon his heart, and its teachings were lived out in life. His children rise up and call him blessed for they have received from him and his worthy partner, a heritage which excels in beauty. He walked with God and was not, for God took him.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the St. Charles U. P. church conducted by the pastor, W. L. Torrence.
