MRS. ABIGAIL SHEARER

Miss Abigail A. Morgan was born in Springfield, Ill., in 1839. She was a sister of Jacob Morgan, at one time editor and publisher of the Winterset, News, and well known to all the people of Madison county, some forty years ago. She spent her youth in Powesheik county, Iowa, where the Morgans lived for many years prior to the time they moved to the new state of Kansas.

She was married to S. W. Shearer in Montezuma in 1858, and with a large family of ten children, came from Kansas to Winterset in 1874. This family of children grew to maturity in this city and were well known to the people who lived here at that time. All of them have removed elsewhere, except William Shearer and Mrs. Laura Criss, who still reside here. The other children are as follows: Fred Shearer and Mrs. Cheetham of Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Thos. Evans of Corbett, Ore.; Mrs. Miller of Los Angeles, Calif.; Frank Shearer of Seattle, Wash.; Bert Shearer of Stuart, Nebr.; Marian Shearer of Des Moines, Iowa; Ira Shearer, formerly of Peru, now dead.

Mr. Shearer died at this place in 1908 and for many years Mrs. Shearer lived with her son William, in Winterset. In 1916, she went west to visit her children and died at the home of her daughter in Portland, July 10, 1918.

She was buried at the Evans cemetery near Corbett, Ore., where her daughter, Mrs. Evans resides, and where the funeral services were held.

Mrs. Shearer was a woman of great force of character and was held in high esteem by all the people of Winterset who knew her. She was an active member of the Christian church and leaves as a heritage to her children the grateful memory of a busy and unselfish life.
