JOSEPH F. DOUGHERTY, West Des Moines

Joseph Dougherty, 77, died Saturday, November 13, 2010, at Iowa Methodist West Lakes in West Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 17, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines, where a luncheon will be served immediately following Mass. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery near Cummings.

The son of Tom and Rosella Dougherty, Joe was born in Cumberland, MD on August 31, 1933. He attended Loyola College in Baltimore, MD. Joe served in the US Navy during the Korean war. He worked for the Social Security Administration after the Navy and then for Amoco Oil Credit Card Center for 36 years, retiring in 1991.

Joe loved Ireland and made 19 trips there. He made it possible for many friends and family members to enjoy this beloved isle. Joe loved the Mass, and went to church daily. His family knows he is in heaven and his little Mass book that he read every day is in his back packet. Joe belonged to St. Vincent de Paul, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Sacred Heart Church and was a 4th degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus.

Joe enjoyed walking, reading and writing for the 'More News in Oranmore, Ireland.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife of 53 years, Mary Lou, his children, Richard of Kansas City, MO, Carol (Bob) Lenihan of Urbandale, and Kevin of West Des Moines; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and his siblings, Cathy Rutledge of Urbana, IL, Sr. Mary Ellen (Angela) Dougherty of Baltimore, MD, Sr. Rosemary (Irene) Dougherty of Silver Spring, MD and John (Clara) Dougherty of Cumberland, Md.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Tom (Marge) Dougherty, Dorothy (Jack) Kelly and Rose Mary Dougherty.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 16, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church where a Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Memorials contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
