MARIE POPPINGA

HUMBOLDT - Marie Poppinga, passed away on Monday, November 8, 2010, at the Winterset Care Center South in Winterset, IA at the age of 94 years.

Marie Hermina Johanna Poppinga, daughter of Henry and Grace (Schoon) Hoefing, was born February 21, 1916 on the family farm Lizard Township, Pocahontas County. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Knierim and confirmed at St Paul Lutheran Church in Manson. She was raised and educated in Manson before the family moved to Pocahontas County, where she continued her education and graduated from the Rolfe High School. Marie received her teaching certificate and taught school for two years. On November 23, 1935, she married Louie Poppinga at St Paul's in Manson. The couple established their home near Gilmore City. They farmed in the Gilmore City, Manson and Pocahontas areas. In 1947, the couple moved to a farm west of Humboldt where Marie helped Louie farm until their retirement in 1985. They then moved into Humboldt. She was a very active member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church until her health prevented her from doing so.

Marie was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, One For All Organization, The Farm Bureau, Silver Sisters, Birthday Club and was active in Card Club.

Marie dearly loved her family and especially enjoyed visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed quilting, crocheting and playing cards.

She is survived by three daughters: Erlene and Gus Henrichs of Winterset, Lavonne and Paul Bangasser of Sioux Falls, SD and Elaine Poppinga of Charles City, IA; one son, Rod and Linda Poppinga of Fort Dodge, IA; nine grandchildren, Greta (Randy) Short of Council Bluffs, Mike (Lori) Bangasser of Brandon, SD, Sue (Randy) Carlson of Pipestone, MN, Deanne (Greg) Steffens of Winterset, Lisa (Gary) Hellevang of Sioux Falls, SD, Chris (Missy) Poppinga of Johnston, Jennifer (Andy) Mattes of Des Moines, Ryan (Andrea) Poppinga of Fort Dodge, Melissa (Dan) Hansen of Des Moines; 15 great-grandchildren, Sierra, Madison, Hannah, Jaden, Jared, Daniel, Bryce, Brooklyn, Abbey, Ashley, Austin, Adam, Grant, Gunnar and Holden; sister Jimmie Taylor of Pocahontas; brother, John Hoefing of Pocahontas; numerous nephews and nieces; and special friend, Maryan Shipley. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Louie; brother, Alvin Hoefing; and a grandson, Daniel Bangasser.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, November 13 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Gene Broughton and the Rev. Robert Molldrem officiating. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Friday at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home in Fort Dodge. Burial will be in Indian Mound Cemetery, Humboldt.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.
