William Furrow of Winterset, died Friday evening at the home of Fred Gray in Lincoln township, where several friends of the Grays were having a party. The body was taken to Mrs. Stanfield's apartments, here in Winterset, where Mr. Furrow had made his home for a number of years past. He was 56 years of age and had been in the employ of Elmer Orris for over twenty-two years.
He is survived by two brothers, John and Jesse Furrow of Mullen, Nebr.; two grandchildren, Cleo and Chloris Sayre of Redwood Falls, Minn., and his step-mother, Mrs. J. J. Furrow of Winterset.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Methodist church and interment made in the Winterset cemetery.
------------------------Winterset Madisonian – May 15, 1924
Pg 2William N. Furrow, son of Jesse J. and Nancy C. Furrow, was born in Tama county, Iowa, Feb. 12, 1868. The family soon moved to Madison county, where he has lived ever since. When a lad of 13 years, a great tragedy came to the family when their home burned and his three sisters perished in the flames.
He was married to Jennie Tayes, on Dec. 3, 1893, who died in 1897. To this union three children were born, two dying in infancy, and Zaida, who grew to womanhood, was married to Frank Sayre and died in 1917, leaving two little girls. His mother died in 1898 and his father in 1907. Will worked on a farm from the time he was old enough and 22 years ago, he bagan working for Elmer Orris on the farm. When Mr. Orris moved to town, Will came with him and began working in the garage where he has been ever since.
For many years he was a member of the Woodmen of the World and of the Maccabees. He was a fine mechanic and one of the most loyal and faithful workers that have ever been in Winterset. His earlier tragedies and his later sorrows which left him homeless, and his partial deafness, made him at first seem silent and reserved, but he had such strength of character, combined with a loyalty and goodness of heart that made him loved most by those who knew him best.
He died of heart failure on May 9th, as he had always wanted to go, without consciously passing through the valley of the shadow of death.
He leaves to mourn his death, two brothers, John and Jesse Furrow of Mullen, Nebr.; two grandchildren, Cleo and Chloris Sayre of Redwood Falls, Minn., and his step-mother, Mrs. J. J. Furrow of Winterset.
