ANNE UTSLER, Winterset

Anne Iola Utsler, 98, died Friday, Nov. 5, 2010, at the Winterset Care Center South.

A visitation was held, Monday, Nov. 8, at Ochiltree Funeral Service. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 9, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the First United Methodist Church or Middle River Hospice of Winterset.

Anne Iola Howard was born in Moundville, Mo., on Jan. 12, 1912 to Thomas and Anna (Howard) Howard. She graduated from East High School in Des Moines and later attended State Teacher’s College (UNI) in Cedar Falls, where she earned her teaching certificate. Anne taught country school in Scott Township, Madison County until her marriage to Joe Utsler, which took place on Jan. 9, 1933, in Bethany, Mo. After her marriage, Anne helped Joe run the family farm. Anne was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Winterset, as well as a member of the Pythian Sisters Winterset Temple #105 of which she was a 50-year member and had served as Grand Chief. She was also involved with several church and community clubs over the years and was a member of the Red Hat Ladies.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; a son-in-law, Elmer Deatsch; a grandson, Chuck Deatsch; a grandson-in-law, J. D. Wildin and her five siblings, Orville, Inez, Esther, Virgil and Russ.

She is survived by her children, Donna Deatsch of Coralville; Larry Utsler of Winterset; Russ Utsler of Peru; Rex Utsler of Centennial, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and many nieces and nephews.
