Van Meter (Special)—Nov. 29.
The community was shocked to learn of the sudden death of Mrs. David T. Griffith on Monday, Nov. 22nd. She was alone at her home at 1630 33rd St., Des Moines, at the time of her death and no one knew of it until her youngest daughter, Wanda Jean, 14, returned home from school in the late afternoon.
Lucy Emily Anderson, daughter of George and Adeline Anderson, was born in Madison county, near Earlham, Dec. 11, 1877, and was nearly 60 years old at the time of her death. She was united in marriage to David T. Griffith, Nov. 8, 1896. The made Van Meter their home until about 17 years ago when they moved to Des Moines. To this union ten children were born. One, Geneva, passed away in infancy. Those left to mourn are her husband, nine children, Mrs. Marguerite Gutshall of Van Meter, Roy T. Griffith of Muscatine, Mrs. Evangaline Stone of Des Moines, Mrs. Ruby Toepfer of Mason City, Mrs. Elizabeth Wagoner of Pontiac, Michigan, Dale Griffith of Cleark Lake, Mrs. Isabelle Odekink of Mason City, Wanda Jean at home; thirteen grandchildren, one great grandchild, five sisters, Mrs. Cora Williams of Farlin, Iowa, Mrs. Mae Hodson of Forest City, Mrs. Mylie Ellis of Shawnee, Oklahoma, Mrs. ------ Storck of ----- Oklahoma, Mrs. Mary Sulgrove of Clayton, New Mexico, and one brother, Roy N. Anderson of Burlingame, Col. The funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon at the Van Meter Methodist Episcopal church---------. Burial was at Worthington.
