Mrs. Martha Kirk Settled in Monroe Township in 1854
A pioneer Madison county woman who came to this community in 1854, passed last Friday with the death of Mrs. Martha Kirk, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kate Conway, of Winterset. She was 88 years of age and had been critically ill about three weeks. She had been an invalid for five years.
Mrs. Kirk was the former Martha Hamblin, daughter of Simeon and Eleanor Hamblin, and was born in Columbia county, Wisc., on November 19, 1849.
She came to Madison county in 1854 with her parents. They settled near Kasson in Monroe township, where she lived until 1919. In that year she moved to Winterset and has since resided in her home on Fourth Avenue.
As a child Mrs. Kirk attended the pioneer schools in Madison county, and at the age of 17 years she became a school teacher. She taught school both in Madison and Union counties.
On April 15, 1875, she was married to James V. Kirk. Her husband died in 1917.
Mrs. Kirk was a member of the Methodist church at Kasson for many years, and after moving to Winterset she transferred her membership to the local Methodist church.
She is survived by her daughter; two grandsons, Lloyd and Russell Conway; and two great grandchildren, Foy and Martha Lee Conway; in addition to a large number of more distant relatives.
Funeral services were held Monday from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home in Winterset, in charge of the Rev. M. R. Talley, pastor of the First Methodist Church. Burial was made in the Hamblin cemetery in Monroe township.
