Orpha Carolyn Passick Derrickson Van Alstine, 85, joined her heavenly family October 18, 2010, the result of complications of Alzheimer's. Services will be Friday October 22, at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Earlham with burial in the Earlham Cemetery. Viewing will be Thursday October 21, from 3 to 7 p.m., at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Earlham Fire Dept., First Presbyterian Church, Middle River Hospice or the family.

She married Charles Derrickson in 1944 and three children were born: Barbara, Bobby and Larry. She owned and operated her own beauty salon from 1946 to 1969 when she sold it and worked at Meridith's Corporation until retirement in 1983. In 1971, she married Lewis Van Alstine.

Orpha was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters, husband Lewis Van Alstine, son Bobby Derrickson and son-in-law Roger Clayton. Left to enjoy her memory are daughter Barbara Clayton of Winterset; son Larry (RuLayne) Derrickson of Dugway, UT; daughter- in-law Charlotte Derrickson of Earlham, ten grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.

Orpha Carolyn Passick Derrickson Van Alstine, 85, joined her heavenly family October 8, 2010, the result of complications of Alzheimer’s.

Orpha was born the sixth child of Detlef H. Passick and Marguerita (Lena) Lamp on January 31, 1925 in Arcadia, Iowa. She was educated in the Westside and Polk City schools graduating in 1943. She graduated Thompson’s Beauty School, Des Moines in 1944. She married Charles Derrickson in 1944 and 3 children were born, Barbara, Bobby, and Larry. She owned and operated her own beauty salon from 1946 to 1969 when she sold it and worked at Meredith’s Corporation until retirement in 1983. In 197 she married Lewis Van Alstine. They lived in several communities in the area, settling in Stuart in 1982. In 1999, Orpha moved back to Earlham until her health declined in 2004. She lived at Care center South in Winterset until her passing.

Orpha was very active in the communities, church activities, and volunteering at meal sites in Stuart and Earlham.

Orpha was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters, husband Lewis Van Alstine, son Bobby Derrickson and son-in-law Roger Clayton.

Left to enjoy her memory are daughter, Barbara Clayton, Winterset; son Larry (RuLayne) Derrickson Dugway, Utah; daughter-in-law Charlotte Derrickson, Earlham; stepson Larry (Pam) Van Alstine, Chatham, Illinois; and stepdaughter Joanne (Larry) Nulph, Waukee; 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, a sister-in-law Virginia Passick, es Moines and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Friday, October 22 at First Presbyterian Church in Earlham. Pastor Robert Waldron officiated. Debbie Jones was the organist and Kathy Hopkins was the soloist. Pallbearers were Shawn Boyle, Brant Payne, Rich Haas, Bill George, Kamren Derrickson, Howard Coffman and Chism Orr. Interment was at Earlham Cemetery in Earlham. Professional arrangements by Kuhn Funeral Home.
